When public works professional Patrick Ryan served as assistant director of Village of Homewood, he oversaw the maintenance of 80 miles of storm sewer and stormwater collection system and 95 miles of roadways and road-right-of-ways. Additionally, Patrick Ryan was responsible for the maintenance works of the Village of Homewood’s vehicles and fleet. He belongs to several professional organizations, including the American Water Works Association (AWWA).

AWWA and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have collaborated to tackle one of the pressing issues facing global water supply: water shortage. One of the most viable solutions to this issue, which is due to the growing population, urbanization and climate change, is water reuse. On February 27, EPA will launch its Water Reuse Action Plan (WRAP). AWWA has contributed major inputs to the WRAP.

WRAP proposes 46 actions for the implementation of water reuse. In the WRAP, collaborative water resource planning and integration at the basin or watershed scale will provide a secure, sustainable and resilient water resource. WRAP will diversify the nation’s water portfolio to ensure the future viability of water resources.

Many points in the WRAP are consistent with AWWA’s Total Water Solutions, an integrated approach to water resource management. Water reuse, especially in communities that are experiencing water shortage, is an excellent way to expand water supply portfolio that is reliable, secure, and sustainable.

AWWA and its sections will provide support and information for the proposals mentioned in the WRAP. For instance, AWWA provides costing and pricing information to utilities to help their managers make sound decisions for the good of the communities they serve. Additionally, AWWA sections have been advancing certification programs for advanced water treatment operators to develop a skilled and competent workforce that is ready to tackle today’s water resource challenges.
